Chief Instructor Lawrance 'Bo' Channon

Sensei Bo Channon at the tender age of 6!

Bo began his Karate career in May 1976 - at the tender age of 4 years and 4 months and Shotokan Karate was already well established in the Channon household which at the time was in Cardiff.

Bo was counting to ten in Japanese and doing press ups on his knuckles when he was still in his cot! He was so used to seeing and hearing Karate 24-7 that it became second nature to him.

He kept asking Selwyn Gould if he could train, to which Selwyn would reply - 'yes, when you can do Heian Shodan', he would then plague the life out of everyone to teach him ... when he learnt the Kata he would ask, 'Please can I train now' to which Selwyn would reply 'yes, but only when you can do the box splits' .... he would then spend all his time practicing the box splits until he could fall effortlessly into them.

Eventually Selwyn gave in, but told him that everyone that entered the Dojo would be looking at him because he was so little, so he told him that if he ever let him down, and did not give 100% he would be 'out'. So began his passion for Shotokan Karate, he would never miss a training session, and was keen to learn and perfect new techniques constantly. When Selwyn Gould retired from Karate, the family carried on training with a young shodan and a young 1st kyu - who's names were Gerry Mbakwe and his younger brother Chico.

The more you stretch... the higher you kick!

Bo took his first grading 'under the watchful eye of Kato Sensei' at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, and was a member of the Japan Karate Association. He took his 1st Dan with Sensei Hirozuko Kanazawa in Watford, at the time he was the youngest person in the world ever to be graded to Dan Grade by Kanazawa Sensei. It was a very great honour for Bo, even though he had always worked extremely hard to be worthy of it. Years later when Bo was in his late teens he trained once more with Kanazawa Sensei, who still remembered that tiny boy who had impressed him sufficiently in Watford.

Bo has throughout the years become noted for taking part in numerous demonstrations, including Kata to music, and some extremely hair raising knife attack sequences with Sensei Mike O'Brien, during his time with the Karate Union of Wales.

Bo has the help and constant support of sister Leica, herself a National champion in both Kumite and Kata, and brother in law Mike, a champion in both the fields of Karate and body building. Bo is Wales' only International and World Kata competitor, the recipient of a Commonwealth Bronze, and is 4 times Welsh Kata Champion.

Bo is now a 5th Dan, and his career in Karate has taken him all over the world ... but wherever he goes, he always shows respect to the people that he trains with and gains their respect in return. Karate has made Bo into the well rounded and popular man that he has become.

Although he is just 34 years old he is actually teaching the grandchildren of his original students! The newly formed Welsh Karate Collective which he has painstakingly planned and brought to fruition marks a new and exciting chapter for Bo and all his existing and future students.
