WKU Championships- 27.11.11
10 students from the WKC entered the WKU invitational on 27th November 2011. As always it was a busy tournament with many associations present.
Jan Celban and Ethan Weatherall entered the 5-7ys , up to 6th kyu mixed kata category. This category used the scoring system rather than flags and for both boys this was a new experience. However, neither were fazed by this and put in fabulous performances with them both winning their first kata medals! Jan the silver and Ethan the bronze!

Jan and Ethan with a very proud Sensei Alice
Owen Davies and James Huggins were in the 8-11 years 5th-4th kyu mixed kata category. Owen was unfortunate to come up against the eventual winner in the early rounds and along with James failed to progress to win a medal.
Holly Huggins, Lara Jones and Jake Swainston‘s category was the large 8-11years 3rd -1st kyu mixed kata. Lara and Jake performed well but went out in the early stages. Holly, one of our more experienced competitors stepped up a level in each round and won fantastic gold.

A chuffed Holly with her Gold Medal
Richard Huggins, Nathan Jones and Amy Outing were all in the 12-15years 3rd-1st kyu mixed kata category. This was a tough category and Nathan and Richard were unfortunate to make it to the medals. After a growling from coach Amy pulled out great performances to gain a hard earned silver.

A happy Amy with her silver medal!
Our only Kumite entries were in the Shobu Jukuren. For those unaware, the competitors in this category had to fight a freestanding punch bag with correct technique, good form and controlled aggression. Ethan and Jan were the representatives for the WKC in this category. They both tried their best and showed great spirit but didn’t manage to make it to the medals.
Sensei Bo, Sensei Alice and Coaches Gareth and Rhys were very happy with all of those representing the WKC. Once again they all put in great performances and as a squad are developing and improving every time. This was the last competition the WKC will be entering for 2011 and it was great for us to finish on a high!

WKGB Welsh Open Championships- 28.8.11
The Welsh Open Championship is always a busy competition but this year it far exceeded expectations with over 400 national and international competitors.
The WKC students had trained very hard over the summer holidays with Sensei Bo and Sensei Gareth for this competition and they did not disappoint.
The first category was the Under 10 years, 4th and below mixed Kata. Jan Celban was unlucky to come up against a strong Belgium competitor who won the category. However, Jan put in a very good performance for his first competition which is promising. Ethan Weatherall was unable to progress to the medals, however, has been receptive to the feedback given by his Sensei’s and this showed on the mat.
Next up were the 10-12, 4th kyu and below mixed kata and representing the WKC were Jacob Beynon, Owen Davies, and Connor Williams. Jacob is ever improving with confidence and form. Owen gained his 3rd Welsh Bronze medal and Connor his 2nd Welsh Gold medal of 2011. Well done!
Cameron Prince and Jake Swainston entered the tough category of 10-12, 3rd Kyu and above mixed kata. Both progressed through the early rounds but didn’t quite make it to the medals. They have improved greatly and their efforts both in the dojo and competition haven’t gone un-noticed.
Amy Outing was in the 13-15, 3rd Kyu and above girls Kata. She had to put in her best performances to achieve a brilliant silver in this high quality group.
Evan Locke stepped up into the 13-15, 3rd Kyu and above boys kata. He was unable to progress to the medals.
Abby Langshaw and Alice Hooper both entered the Senior Female Kata. Abby was unable to medal this time but Alice regained her Welsh Open title finishing off a successful year in the Welsh competitions.
Nick Hooper was our only representative in the Senior Male Kata this year. Nick’s improvement in form continued as he went on to win the gold.
The WKC would like to thank the WKGB for such an efficiently run competition which enabled all the coaches, students and supporters to thoroughly enjoy the day!

British Closed Championships, Sheffield- 25.6.11
Six competitors from the WKC made the journey to Sheffield for this high quality competition.
For Holly Huggins and Amy Outing, it was the highest level of competition they had faced being their first time at the Championships.
Holly was first up in the 10-13 girls kata. This was one of the largest categories of the day and she gained a fantastic bronze.
Amy was in the tough 14-15 girls kata. She gained a top 8 finish in a group of experienced competitors which is encouraging for the future.
Rhys Adey competed in the 16-17 Male Kata. He has struggled with injury this year but gained a brilliant bronze in his first competition of 2011.
Abby Langshaw competed in the 16-17 Female Kata but was unable to progress.
Nick Hooper has also struggled with injury this year and achieved a top 8 finish in the Senior Male Kata.
Alice Hooper was in the Senior Female Kata. She successfully made it through to the final achieving a great silver medal.
The competitors could see the benefits of the pre-competition training and are eager to improve for the next one!
